Omega-3 Concentrates Require Scientifically Relevant Ratios

For 50 years, GC Rieber has specialized in high-potency omega- 3s, offering concentration levels up to 90 percent. But when it comes to efficacy, potency is only part of the equation. To address specific structure/ function applications, fish oils must provide DHA and EPA in scientifically relevant ratios.

Brain Support requires a higher ratio of DHA to EPA, as with GC Rieber’s 70 DHA Ultra, a unique 90 percent omega-3 fish oil with 700 mg/g DHA, 50 mg/g EPA, and 850 mg/g total omega-3s. DHA is a major component of the brain’s cellular membrane structure. Essential for both brain and nervous system development, DHA supports brain health by mediating the transport of choline and amino acids.

Research shows DHA plays a key role in the development of children’s learning and cognitive behavior. One study assessed DHA levels in 493 schoolchildren with below-average reading skills. Lower DHA concentrations were associated with poorer reading ability and higher levels of parent-rated oppositional behavior and emotional volatility.(Montgomery, 2013. Omega- 3 Fatty Acids in Children are Associated with Poor Cognitive Performance and Behavior. PloS ONE)

Eye Health also requires a higher ratio of DHA to EPA (GC Rieber 70 DHA Ultra, VivoMega 1050). The light-sensitive retina layer of the eye has the body’s highest concentration of DHA. DHA supports optimal vision health by maintaining and protecting the structure of the eye.

Research also shows DHA is a building block for developing infants’ eyes. A randomized trial investigated the impact of DHA on the visual acuity of 244 infants. Babies were assigned formulas containing various DHA levels. After 12 months, infants fed formula without DHA had significantly poorer visual acuity than those receiving DHA-supplemented formulas with at least 0.32 percent total omega-3s. (Birch, 2010. DHA Intake and Measurement of Neural Development Study. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition)

Omega-3 concentrates for Heart Health have a relatively balanced ratio of EPA and DHA (GC Rieber VivoMega 3624, 3525, 3322, 5510, 4020). Decades of research have shown these fish oils support heart health by helping maintain blood pressure already within normal ranges and reducing the body’s ability to manufacture and store triglycerides.

In fact, the American Heart Association recommends daily omega-3 intake for its proven cardio-protective benefits. And, in May 2014, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved the first omega-3 drug, designed to reduce severely elevated triglyceride levels in adults with proper diet.

Omega-3 concentrates for Joint Health require a higher ratio of EPA to DHA (GC Rieber VivoMega 3624, 3525, 3322, 5510, 4020). Research has found significant concentrations of EPA and balanced EPA:DHA blends support joint health, producing hormone- like compounds that positively influence the body’s inflammatory response. Several studies show omega-3s’ lubricating benefits may increase mobility while reducing joint stiffness and discomfort.

One study followed 250 subjects experiencing neck or back discomfort. Each took 1,200 mg of EPA-rich omega-3s daily. Sixty percent said their joint discomfort improved, 80 percent were satisfied with their improvement, and 88 percent said they would continue to take the fish oil. (Maroon, 2006. Omega 3 Fatty Acids as an Anti-Inflammatory.

Surgical Neurology) Studies also demonstrate that omega-3s with a higher ratio of EPA to DHA (GC Rieber VivoMega 5510, 4020) are must-haves for maintaining Skin Health. They help support skin integrity by protecting against external elements and influencing cells’ ability to hold water—generating softer, suppler skin. Some experts hypothesize omega-3s may reduce the body’s production of natural chemicals involved in the aging process.

A double-blind study examining the effects of omega-3s on oxidative stress had 42 healthy subjects take EPA or monounsaturated oleic acid daily for three months. Those taking EPA experienced protection against ultraviolet radiation-induced skin damage and reduction in sunburn. (Rhodes, 2003. Effect of EPA on UVR-related Skin Damage in Humans. Carcinogenesis)
