BI Nutraceuticals Reduces Water Consumption at California Facility
BI Nutraceuticals (Long Beach, CA) reported reducing its annual water consumption and is on track to save nearly 2.5 million gallons of water year-over-year, according to the 2013-2014 Wastewater Statement preview from Los Angeles County.
This significant reduction in water usage was attributed to several factors both big and small including the addition of a more efficient steam sterilization unit, retrofitting existing steam units to make them greener and adjustments to BI’s irrigation schedule, the company stated.
George Pontiakos, the company’s president and CEO, said availability of water is always a concern and this year’s drought in Southern California only further motivated BI to evaluate its water usage and look for ways to reduce consumption.
“We are proud to have taken this important step and are evaluating other ways we can improve our processes to make them more green,” said Pontiakos.
In 1972, Los Angeles County’s Sanitation District Board of Directors first adopted the Wastewater Ordinance in an effort to establish controls on users of the Sanitation Districts’ sewerage system, protect the environment and public health and provide for the maximum beneficial use of the facilities, reported BI.
