Digestive Health

Easy to Digest

by Mike Straus | April 1, 2026

The digestive health ingredients market is becoming more sophisticated thanks to innovation, new research and consumer demand for clinically validated ingredients.

The digestive health ingredients space remains one of the strongest categories for ingredient suppliers and supplement manufacturers. One February 2026 Market Research Future analysis found that the digestive health ingredients market, estimated at $13.51 billion worldwide in 2025, will grow to more than $30 billion by 2035.1 As the digestive health market continues its remarkable growth, expect new opportunities to arise for innovative ingredients that deliver tangible benefits to consumers. Here are just some of the trends driving innovation in the digestive health ingredients space.

Digestive Health Market Becomes More Sophisticated

The digestive health ingredients market is becoming more sophisticated, driven in part by a rising awareness of the microbiome-gut-brain axis. According to Suresh Lakshmikanthan, PhD, BPharm, chief business officer at Natural Remedies in India, this market is hitting a growth phase where stakeholders are moving beyond short-term symptom relief and toward a systems management perspective.

“This new perspective recognizes the gut’s role in metabolic, immune and neuroendocrine function,” Lakshmikanthan said. “As a result, the expectation from formulators is higher; they want reproducible data, defined mechanisms and ingredients that can withstand scientific and regulatory scrutiny.”

Layn Natural Ingredients Chief Scientific Officer James Roza in Irvine, CA noted that the digestive health sector’s growth is being driven by rising awareness of the microbiome-gut-brain axis, and the digestive health category is rapidly expanding to include a variety of new ingredients. Roza pointed to prebiotic fiber’s emergence as a microbiome influencer and the impact of probiotic metabolites like butyric acid as examples of the digestive health market’s diversification.

CK Ingredients Vice President of Innovation Colleen Madden in Oakville, ON, Canada explained that the digestive health ingredients market is finally ready for science-backed innovation. While the gut health category was primarily dominated by fiber and probiotics in the past, she said, the market has now evolved into a more sophisticated, mechanism-driven nutraceutical space.

“Consumers are still seeking solutions for gut comfort and overall well-being, but their expectations have expanded,” Madden explained. “Digestive health is now understood to connect directly to metabolic wellness, glycemic control and even gut-brain axis signaling. As a result, interest has shifted beyond basic probiotics and fiber toward ingredients with defined mechanisms of action. Today’s consumers, and increasingly, brands, are looking for clinical sophistication and mechanistic evidence; generic gut health claims are no longer sufficient.”

Aqsa Saleem, marketing manager at Specialty Enzymes & Probiotics in Chino, CA, noted that this segment’s consumers have changed. An aging population producing fewer endogenous digestive enzymes and a massive wave of GLP-1 users dealing with digestive side effects, combined with everyday lifestyle factors like stress, processed foods and sedentary behavior are compounding the demand for digestive health ingredients across every demographic.

“Consumers have also changed,” Saleem said. “They’re savvy, well-informed, and no longer looking for a generic ‘digestive support’ claim. Today’s consumers want clean-label, science-backed, evidence-based solutions. They also want supplement formats that fit their lives, which is why functional foods and beverages with added probiotics and digestive support are exploding.”

In addition to digestive comfort support, consumers are also interested in other aspects of digestive health. IFF Regional Marketing Manager for North America Mindy Wetzel in Madison, WI noted that as the market has matured, there is a growing interest in how the gut supports nutrient absorption, immune resilience, metabolic health and healthy aging. This evolution, Wetzel said, is creating meaningful opportunities for innovation, even in this mature category.

For Michael McCarthy, head of marketing and business development at Pharmachem in Kearny, NJ, digestive health remains one of the most durable and opportunity-rich categories in the supplement industry. McCarthy noted that two main factors are shaping the current market. First, consumers are demanding more proof, including strain-specific clinical studies, clinically validated doses, documented stability and measurable endpoints. Second, formulators are widening their approach beyond classic probiotics and into prebiotics, synbiotics, targeted enzymes and postbiotics. These solutions, McCarthy said, offer formulators improved stability, simplified supply chains, and greater flexibility across delivery formats, including stick packs, powders, gummies and functional beverages.

Ingredients Start Prioritizing Precision

Ingredient innovation in the digestive health market is expanding in multiple directions at once, said Shaheen Majeed, global chief executive officer and managing director of Sabinsa in East Windsor, NJ. Majeed noted that the emergence of postbiotics is a particularly exciting development; Sabinsa recently introduced its branded PoZibio, a patented heat-inactivated Lactobacillus paracasei D3.5 strain that offers unique formulation advantages, including room temperature stability and compatibility with delivery formats like capsules, gummies and functional beverages.

“Postbiotics work through distinct mechanisms, such as PoZibio’s use of lipoteichoic acid to strengthen the gut barrier, complementing rather than replacing the colonization benefits of traditional probiotics,” Majeed explained. “We’re also seeing sophisticated synbiotic formulations that strategically combine prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes to create comprehensive gut health solutions targeting different aspects of digestive function.”

Furthermore, Majeed said, formulators are now incorporating bioavailability enhancers like Sabinsa’s branded BioPerine to ensure nutrients actually reach therapeutic levels in the body. BioPerine is a patented extract from black pepper standardized to 95 percent piperine that is designed to enhance the bioavailability of herbal extracts, water-soluble vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins, antioxidants, amino acids and minerals.

Another area where ingredients are becoming more advanced is in precision targeting mechanisms. Lakshmikanthan noted that precision and personalization are driving digestive health innovation; the industry is moving from consistent bioactive profiles toward targeted modulation of specific microbial pathways.

“Botanical and polyphenol-based ingredients are being evaluated with advanced characterization methods like metabolomic profiling and fingerprinting to ensure reproducible efficacy and safety,” Lakshmikanthan explained. “The other major trend is a growing interest in gut-mediated pathways, particularly how microbiome modulation and metabolites such as butyrate may participate in downstream signaling events relevant to satiety and metabolic regulation.”

Manufacturer Success Depends on Clinical Evidence

Experts say that finished-product manufacturers need to invest in several areas to successfully capitalize on the growing digestive health space. Roza, for instance, noted that manufacturers should align themselves with suppliers that are truly invested in digestive health and that have the technology to reliably produce sophisticated ingredients. Digestive health is an area that requires a great deal of expertise and research, he said, and only companies with a particular focus on digestive support should be considered as partners.

Madden, meanwhile, noted that tolerability must be treated as a primary endpoint rather than as an afterthought. Even the most effective ingredient is only valuable if consumers continue taking it. Gastrointestinal discomfort remains one of the biggest drivers of product discontinuation in this category, she said, which is why manufacturers should prioritize ingredients supported by human clinical data that demonstrate comfort at effective doses.

“It’s also important to consider how ingredients interact within a formula,” Madden said. “Overlapping mechanisms or excessive fermentation load can unintentionally increase digestive stress. Comfort drives compliance, and compliance ultimately drives meaningful outcomes.”

For Wetzel, the successful formulation of digestive health products starts with clarity of purpose and scientific precision. Manufacturers, she said, should look beyond ingredient categories and focus on well-characterized strains or solutions with clear mechanisms of action and human clinical support.

“Quality and stability are also critical,” Wetzel noted. “Ensuring that ingredients perform consistently through end-of-shelf-life is essential for maintaining trust with both regulators and consumers. Regulatory readiness and claims alignment should be built into product development early, rather than treated as an afterthought.”

Finally, Wetzel said, end-user experience matters. Format, taste, convenience and ease of integration into daily routines all play an important role in long-term adherence.

Majeed noted that manufacturers must prioritize clinical evidence over marketing claims: “Consumers are informed, discerning and increasingly skeptical, demanding transparency about strain identity, effective dosage, mechanism of action and documented health benefits. Choose ingredients supported by published research, well-defined biological pathways, and, ideally, strong intellectual property and patent protection that demonstrate genuine innovation rather than trend-based formulation.”

Majeed said formulators should also consider the complete system rather than focusing solely on isolated ingredients. Sabinsa’s branded Curcumin C3 Complex, when paired with its branded BioPerine, increases curcuminoid bioavailability by 2,000 percent, he said, transforming an ingredient with poor absorption into one that achieves therapeutic blood levels. Similarly, combining Sabinsa’s postbiotic PoZibio with probiotic LactoSpore and prebiotic Starmeric creates a comprehensive, multi-mechanistic approach to gut health support.

Emerging Research Validates Ingredient Performance

New research is demonstrating that digestive health ingredients can also influence overall health. Roza explained that new research has found that these ingredients can affect weight management, insulin sensitivity, and even cognitive health. Meanwhile, he said, emerging epigenetic studies have found that probiotics and their metabolites can modulate gene expression, offering significant health benefits.

Julie Imperato, marketing & communication manager for Nexira in France, said that emerging scientific evidence underscores the importance of diversity both in the microbiota and the dietary fibers that feed them. A broader range of fiber types supports a more diverse gut ecosystem, she said, which is strongly associated with improved metabolic, immune and gut barrier function.

“The science is increasingly focused on communication networks within the gut,” explained Lakshmikanthan. “There is expanding exploration of how shifts in microbial ecology influence production of key metabolites, and how those metabolites interact with host pathways, including GLP-1–related signaling. At the same time, the industry continues to value rigorous trials demonstrating improvement in established endpoints such as upper-GI (gastrointestinal) comfort and maintenance of a healthy gastric environment.”

Wetzel, meanwhile, said that emerging research continues to underscore that digestive health is deeply interconnected to overall health. The gut microbiome influences not only digestion, but also immune function, metabolism and communication along the gut-brain axis.

“Scientific focus has shifted toward understanding microbial function, including metabolite production and host interactions, rather than simply cataloging microbial composition,” Wetzel explained. “Research is also exploring how targeted combinations of probiotics and complementary ingredients like botanicals can deliver more specific and measurable outcomes. This growing body of evidence is helping move the category from general wellness positioning toward evidence-led, outcome-oriented solutions, raising the bar for ingredient substantiation and product credibility.”

Madden, meanwhile, pointed to new research on a unique, standardized plant extract from Aegle marmelos, brand name Gevalin, which has demonstrated wide-ranging benefits in reducing digestive discomfort, bloating, and acidity while supporting smooth digestion even at low doses. This research also found that Gevalin can reduce incidences of both diarrhea and constipation due to its natural mucosa-increasing mechanism of action.

Other research on Sabinsa’s PoZibio has found that strengthening the gut barrier through enhanced mucin production both improves digestion and helps reduce systemic inflammation. Majeed said that other studies have found that PoZibio can support cognitive function and may help address age-related cognitive decline.

“The mechanism is fascinating,” Majeed said. “The lipoteichoic acid in PoZibio stimulates the TLR-2/p38-MAPK/NF-κB pathway, which supports gut barrier integrity while helping to modulate inflammatory responses. This targeted interaction highlights the increasingly sophisticated understanding of how gut-focused interventions can influence whole-body physiology.”

Ongoing clinical trials in the United Kingdom are currently investigating PoZibio’s potential to improve cognitive function and reduce gut inflammation in older adults.

New research has found that biotics are not interchangeable. McCarthy said that according to new research, probiotic strains and doses matter, and outcomes are heterogeneous. Two different strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus are not functionally equivalent just because they share the same species name.

“The literature consistently shows heterogeneous outcomes based on strain selection, dosage, delivery format, and study population,” McCarthy noted. “Precision and documentation matter more than ever.”

Meanwhile, emerging ingredients are demonstrating strong efficacy in studies. Saleem cited the results of the INFOGEST study, a peer-reviewed digestion simulation study examining the impact of Specialty Enzymes’ branded DigeSEB Super on macronutrient breakdown in complex food. The study found that adding DigeSEB Super led to an 82 percent reduction in food viscosity, 51 percent more free amino acid release, 69 percent more sugar release and 10 percent more free fatty acid release, demonstrating improved digestion of protein, carbohydrates and fat.2

Furthermore, a recently completed prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial on the impact of Specialty Enzymes’ branded DigeSEB Super PB on digestion and gastrointestinal symptoms found that DigeSEB meaningfully affected several gastrointestinal endpoints. The study found that DigeSEB Super PB reduced pain severity and provided relief from abdominal discomfort, reduced stool frequency and improved stool consistency, provided relief from heartburn and acid reflux, and improved the resolution of constipation.

Digestive Health Ingredients Primed for Expansion

The digestive health ingredients space is a key growth driver for nutraceuticals, with consumers turning to these products in droves. Emerging scientific developments are making digestive health ingredients more sophisticated, moving beyond short-term symptom relief and toward long-term health management. Research into the microbiome-gut-brain axis has revealed new mechanisms of action for digestive health ingredients, giving formulators more flexibility and new avenues for producing effective ingredients.

Manufacturers are also beginning to prioritize precision formulations that leverage postbiotics and bioavailability enhancers to have a stronger, more comprehensive impact without compromising on gastrointestinal comfort. The digestive health ingredients space is home to a great deal of scientific study and innovation, with ingredient suppliers and formulators investing in clinical trials to prove out mechanisms of action. While this market has predominantly consisted of dietary fibers in the past, new ingredients hitting the space include pre-, pro- and post-biotics, botanicals, polyphenols and acids. As the digestive health ingredients space continues to grow, more opportunities will open up for new ingredients that can provide digestive health benefits without creating issues like bloating, discomfort or digestive distress.
