Herbalist & Alchemist Moves Into New Facility, Increases Herb Extraction Capacity

by Shari Barbanel | February 8, 2023

Herbalist & Alchemist (H&A, Washington, NJ), the maker of the award-winning, practitioner-quality, herbal products Herbalist & Alchemistformulated by David Winston RH(AHG), has moved to a new location, increasing production capacity to accommodate demand for both the company’s liquid and solid botanical extracts. The new facility has been certified by OK Kosher.

“As our business of providing the highest quality herbal products continued to thrive and demand outpaced supply, it was clear we had outgrown our current space,” said CEO Beth Lambert.  “After many months of searching for a new location, we chose to extensively refurbish a vacant space close to our previous location.”

“The new, larger facility is phenomenal—a testament to all the hard work that that went into it,” said Winston. “It is quite the transformation, turning a long-vacant concrete shell into a new, beautiful manufacturing facility almost triple the size of our previous facility.”

The increased capacity includes doubling the production capabilities for H&A’s Solid Extracts, a somewhat rare dosage form with distinct processing challenges that are uncommon because of the labor, cost, and amount of materials required to produce this super-concentrated, nutrient-rich form. Its high rate of acceptance among practitioners speaks to the quality and efficacy of this unique product, available in Blueberry, Pomegranate-Goji Berry, and award-winning Hawthorn.

H&A’s BIO-SPECIFIC liquid extraction process requires more space than customary because it is quite labor intensive, beginning with delivery of fresh plants that herbalists examine by hand, removing any extraneous agricultural material.Since some herbs like skullcap, echinacea and cleavers lose activity upon drying, H&A always extracts these fresh. Conversely, the dried forms of many bitter, pungent, or acrid herbs produce a more energetically-vibrant extract. Certain herbs such as stragalus need to be simmered in water before alcohol is added to produce a vital extract. These formulation decisions, and the knowledge behind them, are an integral part of assuring a superior herbal extract. During extraction, plant residues are calcined, concentrating the essential minerals of the plant. This material is added back in a last step before bottling, creating a product unique to Herbalist & Alchemist—one that contains the full spectrum of the plant’s nutrients.

Each operational area now has dedicated space (rooms for garbling, grinding, calcining, equipment wash down, and more). The new facility also has classroom space for David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies herbalist training program for those attending in person, and other education events.

Sustainability was top of mind for the move, according to the company. Reusable crates were rented rather than relying primarily on boxes, and those boxes that were used were repurposed. The only moving material bought was pallet wrap, which was donated to a local organization that turns it into park benches. Repurposing the building, which had been empty for more than 20 years, brings new life into a long dormant area.
