In fall 2013, Capsugel became the first empty-capsule manufacturer to have products that are verified by the Non-GMO Project, according to Mark Vieceli, senior director of sales, marketing and business development, Capsugel. The company’s Non-GMO Project-verified capsules currently are:

Plantcaps—Made of pullulan, Plantcaps capsules are derived from tapioca and are a water-soluble polysaccharide produced through a natural fermentation process. These capsules offer the best oxygen barrier of all plant-based products, masking pungent odors and protecting sensitive ingredients. Organic supplement manufacturers in the United States using Plantcaps can also benefit from the “Made with Organic Ingredients” labeling when delivering organic ingredients.

Vcaps Plus—One of the fastest growing vegetarian capsules, this capsule offers a high-gloss appearance, color choices, and quick dissolution—100 percent in 30 minutes or less—due to the elimination of a gelling system. Vegan and vegetarian approved as well as kosher, halal certified, it is gluten-free, starch-free and additive free.

Vcaps—The low-moisture Vcaps was the first plant-based hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) introduced more than a decade ago. It is ideal for moisture-sensitive ingredients and dry herbal products.

Licaps Vcaps Plus—This capsule offers all the features of Vcaps Plus along with the proprietary Licaps technology ideal for delivery of liquid-filled products. The Licaps technology helps, depending on formulation, to improve bioavailability through the delivery of pre-solublized ingredients. A robust seal is created by fusing the outer shells, using a precision microspray process (LEMS), resulting in no need for banding and no leakage.

These capsules are also free of additives, preservatives, allergens, starch, and gluten and are kosher- and halal-certified, approved by the Vegetarian Society, and are vegan-certified.
