People who make a habit of taking dietary supplements are also more inclined to make other healthy lifestyle choices.
That information is delineated in one of a series of tables accompanying the results of last year’s annual Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) survey conducted in August 2014. The results, released at the end of October, include the following responses from supplement users versus non-users:
• 86 percent of supplement users and 79 percent of non-users try to eat a balanced diet
• 78 percent of supplement users and 74 percent of non-users do not smoke
• 75 percent of supplement users and 61 percent of non-users visit their doctors regularly
• 70 percent of supplement users and 64 percent of non-users get a good night’s sleep
• 66 percent of supplement users and 58 percent of non-users maintain healthy weight
• 67 percent of supplement users and 56 percent of non-users exercise regularly.
The survey, then in its 15th consecutive year, was conducted online Aug. 25-29, 2014, for CRN by Ipsos Public Affairs, using a national sample of 2,010 adults, ages 18 and older aged and above, from its U.S. online panel.
Among those surveyed, 68 percent responded that they take dietary supplements, and 50 percent said they were regular users. Usage was consistent across the four regions, coming in at 68 percent in the West, East and South, and at 69 percent in the Midwest.
