NIE: Can you tell us about the What’s Your Blue program?
Lynda M. Doyle (senior vice president, global marketing, OmniActive Health Technologies): “Traditionally, the primary focus within the eye health category has been on an increasingly aging population that is aware of their need for prevention or to address age-related eye conditions.
However, the majority of the population, including those who actively take steps to protect their eyes, are unaware how high-energy blue light effects eye health and to what extent. High-energy blue light is part of the visible spectrum of light that bombards our eyes daily. Predominant sources include electronic devices such as television, tablets, and computers, and indoor energy-efficient lighting including compact fluorescent and LED lighting. High-energy blue light reaches deep into the eye and can harm the macula. Short-term exposure can lead to eye fatigue, also referred to as ‘digital eye strain,’ and characterized by dry eyes and blurry vision. Statistics detailing the magnitude of blue light exposure demonstrates that all age groups are susceptible to its effects on eye health.
OmniActive saw this as a growing concern and took the initiative with our What’s Your B.L.U.E. campaign to raise awareness about high-energy blue light, its sources and effects, and how all three macular carotenoids as found in Lutemax 2020 support visual health by filtering high-energy blue light.”
