Beyond CBD? Denver-based company aims to forge a new path forward with CBN

CBD CBD

Nutrition Industry Executive (NIE) magazine spoke with Charlotte Mosher, director of sales and marketing for Slumber CBN, which is located in Denver, CO (https://slumbercbn.com):

NIE: Why is CBN important as an ingredient, and how are you differentiating it, products, and market-wise, from CBD and full-spectrum hemp extracts?

CBN is a minor cannabinoid that has been recently researched and found to have a positive effect on sleep. In comparison to CBD, CBN is very expensive to extract and formulate into a powerful sleep aid. Full-spectrum CBD only has trace amounts of CBN in it, so most likely you won’t feel its effects.

We have worked months on end to formulate our signature and proprietary CBN blend that is strong enough to help many of our customers struggling with severe insomnia. Until recently, many companies did not even have a CBN-only sleep aid. Most commonly you will see melatonin, a synthetic hormone, added to CBD products.

NIE: Why do you consider Slumber CBN to be disruptive in the hemp/CBD space?

Slumber’s vision is to bring our customers a powerful and natural sleep aid. Our proprietary formula is powered by nature to promote deep and restful sleep. We are a one-stop for the highest quality CBN product on the market: online, retail, custom and bulk.

NIE: Very briefly, compare the science behind CBN with the science behind CBD.

There is still a lot to learn about CBN and we are working to develop more content and studies around CBN for sleep.

CBN, aka cannabinol, is found in the hemp and cannabis plant. It is a cannabinoid thought to have therapeutic benefits similar to the other popular cannabinoids, THC and CBD. CBN is naturally occurring in the cannabis or hemp plant as the plant ages. Over time, or when exposed to oxygen or heat, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) converts into CBN. In its final state, CBN has trace or zero amounts of CBD or THC.

Slumber CBN is a hemp-derived supplement that is THC-free. Each of our products has a QR (quick response) code, so you and your customers can easily find the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) on our website so that consumers know exactly what they are taking.

NIE: How does CBN work in the body?

CBN interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which is thought to help regulate many of the body’s physiological functions such as cognition, pain perception, mood, appetite and sleep. There are two main cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CBN binds primarily to the CB2, a receptor that helps to induce a sleepy state.

Our proprietary blend is designed to activate this receptor specifically, helping consumers fall asleep and stay asleep—without negative side effects. No high, whatsoever.

NIE: How is CBN different from THC and CBD?

CBN is a byproduct of the degradation of THC and produces no psychoactive effects. This is often one of the main concerns for people who don’t consume THC but want to explore ways they can benefit from the natural properties of the hemp plant without getting “high.”

CBD is the second-most-abundant cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. CBD has a little bit more in common with CBN, but isn’t known for producing a sleepy, sedative effect. CBD is more commonly used for those trying to relieve physical pain, inflammation and anxiety.

So when manufacturers are trying to decide among CBN, CBD and THC, CBN is thought to be the best choice for a sleep aid.

NIE: Are sleep aids your only focus, and, if not, what’s ahead?

Slumber’s identity will always be built around creating top-quality CBN products. We plan to bring a full line of CBN products that will enhance the overall “sleep experience” for our customers. While we have some fantastic tinctures and soft gels available now, we plan to launch a variety of new products in the coming months. We are excited to announce a line of CBN + CBD topicals this month!

NIE: How are you partnering with others for wholesale, bulk and private label?

Slumber-branded products are available at a wide variety of retail, medical and distribution channels, such as; family practices, chiropractic offices, hemp/CBD Stores, beauty salons, hotels, boutiques, etc. We are looking to expand our partnerships outside of the U.S. and are eager to make Slumber products readily available to our customers.

Slumber’s Private Label, White Label and Bulk Program were created to help our customers to profit on the rapidly growing hemp and CBN industry while creating their own branded CBN products. Our GMP (good manufacturing practice)-compliant facility in Denver, CO allows our team to customize and formulate a top-quality CBN product for their brand.

We have a great opportunity to support and customize products for all of our partners, which will help them save time and money—so they can focus on growing their business.
