As part of Dr. Bronner’s GMO labeling advocacy, just prior to the momentous vote in Oregon, the company placed an advertorial in major nationally syndicated magazines including Harper’s, Scientific American, New Yorker, The Nation, but Science magazine refused to run the ad.

Non-GMO Project

The advertorial discusses the rise in pesticide inputs precipitated by GMOs.

“For example, the use of systemic insecticides, which coat GMO corn and soy seeds and are incorporated and expressed inside the entire plant, has skyrocketed in the last ten years. This includes the use of neonicotinoids (neonics) which are extremely powerful neurotoxins that contaminate our food and water and destroy non-target pollinators and wildlife such as bees, butterflies and birds,” reads the advertorial.

According to the Dr. Bronner’s, Science magazine refused to run the ad, expressing concern that it would result in “a battle with the GMO industry.” Mother Jones reporter Tom Philpott broke the story, investigating the connection between the corporations that produce GMOs and their correlated chemical inputs, and ostensibly independent media such as Science.
