AI vs. You: The Crucial Difference in Crafting Memorable Communications

AI vs. You: The Crucial Difference in Crafting Memorable Communications

by Amy Summers | May 1, 2024

My client dispatched me to Cortes Island to meet up with Dr. Andrew Weil, a key figure in a video project we were producing about natural pet food. The instructions were crystal clear: make the journey to this remote island nestled in the Discovery Islands archipelago off the coast of British Columbia, Canada, execute our interview swiftly, and ensure minimal disruption to Dr. Weil, who was immersed in meeting a writing deadline for his upcoming book.

En route, my mind buzzed with images of Dr. Weil engrossed in his literary pursuit, envisioning myself delicately maneuvering around his abode to set up equipment for capturing a few crucial soundbites before catching the last ferry back to Vancouver. Yet, upon reaching our destination, it quickly became evident that Dr. Weil was eager for a reprieve from his writing endeavors, warmly embracing our presence and engaging with us in a surprisingly sociable manner.

In the solitary realms of creativity, the act of writing often conjures images of seclusion and introspection. One might envision an author holed up in a rustic cabin, typewriter keys clacking in the quietude of the woods, reminiscent of iconic scenes from cinematic masterpieces like “Misery,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Stranger than Fiction” and “The Shining.”

Writing, by its very nature, demands solitude, as authors frequently find themselves immersed in their own thoughts. Perhaps that’s why many individuals who possess a passion for writing often exhibit introverted tendencies. Whether it’s crafting the perfect scene for a novel or composing an engaging article, the process primarily unfolds within the confines of one’s mind. Collaboration, typically associated with verbal exchange and collective brainstorming, contrasts sharply with the solitary nature of writing. This holds true across various writing endeavors, be it drafting articles, composing press releases, or even curating social media content. The intricacies involved in these tasks often make collaboration challenging and time-consuming, as each word and phrase requires careful consideration and refinement, a process best undertaken in solitude.

Times Are Shifting: Could Technology Be the Turning Point?

The potential of AI, embodied in entities like ChatGPT, is nothing short of remarkable, particularly when it comes to time-consuming tasks like drafting press releases, articles, social media posts and developing other creative works. Yet, amidst this marvel, a fundamental question arises: Does this capability truly reflect uniqueness, or is it merely a replication of existing content?

Perhaps you’ve noticed a subtle shift in writing styles written lately. There’s a discernible signature to ChatGPT’s contributions, especially when the author’s engagement with the AI tool seems lacking, resulting in social media posts or press releases that bear its distinct mark. Recently, a colleague on LinkedIn boldly exposed another professional for relying on ChatGPT to create a lengthy social media post detailing his morning shower musings. The post was strewn with emojis and a tone that unmistakably exposed the use of AI, prompting speculation about whether the professional, his assistant or his marketing team had indeed enlisted the help of ChatGPT.

In the Future of Communication, Will AI Emerge as an Ally or Adversary?

AI can be an asset, provided that one remains actively involved in the writing process. By using ChatGPT as a collaborative partner, to refine your ideas and approach, you reduce the isolation associated with writing and gain ‘round the clock access to a creative brainstorming companion.

Nevertheless, it’s essential to acknowledge that AI has limitations. Despite its prowess, nothing can replace the human touch inherent in storytelling. The individual perspective and human element remain pivotal in crafting compelling communication pieces.

While numerous resources offer insights into utilizing AI for communication purposes, here we will delve into its constraints and provide strategies for maintaining and accentuating your unique writing style alongside this technological support.

Tease It

Begin your article, press release or social media post with a tantalizing teaser to captivate your audience from the outset. This could be a thought-provoking question, a surprising fact, or a compelling anecdote that hooks the reader’s attention and encourages them to continue reading. Another technique involves starting the narrative with a jaw-dropping moment, then revisiting it later in the article to provide the complete story. By arousing curiosity right from the start, you set the stage for engagement and ensure that your audience remains invested in your message.

Crafting enticing story teases requires careful attention to detail, especially when utilizing AI tools prone to repetitive patterns. Therefore, invest ample time in honing headlines, subheads and teases to ensure they stand out and captivate attention. While writing teases, avoid exaggerations that may mislead readers, as this reflects poorly on credibility. Effective teases initiate with a compelling “aha” moment or promise, leading seamlessly into substantive information that resonates with the audience. Strive to evoke emotions such as happiness, surprise, frustration or anger, as these often prompt readers to share the content. However, be wary of excessive flashiness, as it can lead to disappointment if the story fails to deliver on its promises, eroding trust. Respect your audience by delivering on the tease’s promise, thereby fostering loyalty and engagement.

Be Vulnerable

Masterful speakers often excel in storytelling, a skill particularly evident at a global leadership conference I attend each year. This event consistently features top-tier speakers, yet one notable observation is the contrast between a renowned CEO and a seasoned pastor when addressing the audience. Despite the CEO’s prominence, it’s often the pastor who captivates the crowd more profoundly. This phenomenon isn’t surprising, especially for those familiar with religious teachings, where parables serve as powerful vehicles for imparting wisdom. Pastors adeptly weave personal anecdotes into their sermons, effectively drawing audiences into their messages. This practice of storytelling has been used for centuries and is highly effective for getting your message out to the masses.

Similarly, integrating personal narratives into your writing can forge deeper connections with your audience. Unlike AI, which lacks the lived experiences unique to individuals, you possess a treasure trove of personal stories. Authenticity is paramount in storytelling and attempting to fabricate personal anecdotes with AI risks undermining credibility and compromising trust. However, AI can serve as a valuable tool in refining your narrative, aiding in clarity, conciseness and emotional resonance. Utilizing ChatGPT prompts like “make it more clear, concise, heartfelt” can streamline your storytelling process, ensuring that your narrative remains focused and impactful. Capture moments of vulnerability and introspection in your writing, as these resonate with readers. Employ descriptive language to paint scenes and evoke emotions, thereby immersing your audience in your narrative. By infusing authenticity and emotion into your writing, you craft a unique experience for your readers, as you alone hold the keys to your personal stories.

Avoid Adjective and Adverb Bombing

While adjectives and adverbs can enhance the richness of your writing, it’s crucial to wield them judiciously. Avoid falling into the trap of “adjective and adverb bombing,” where your sentences become weighed down with excessive descriptors that hinder clarity and dilute your message.

This is an area where AI often falters, as evidenced by press releases brimming with unnecessary adjectives and adverbs, a telltale sign of AI-generated content. Particularly in journalistic writing, where the focus is on delivering facts, it’s imperative to exercise restraint. Journalists prioritize conveying news and stories devoid of excessive embellishments, steering clear of marketing-like language. To avoid this pitfall, invest time in refining your writing with your AI companion, pruning repetitive words, and eliminating superfluous descriptors. Instead, concentrate on presenting the facts concisely and clearly, reserving adjectives to enhance clarity and emphasize pertinent details. Striking this balance ensures that your message resonates effectively with your audience without distractions.

Get to the Point

In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, brevity is key to maintaining audience engagement. Lengthy social media posts, meandering articles or press releases that unnecessarily exceed one page are typically authored by individuals who dominate conversations or by AI algorithms.

Avoid beating around the bush or meandering through unnecessary tangents that risk losing your audience’s interest. Instead, get straight to the point and communicate your message efficiently. Focus on delivering clear and impactful content that respects your audience’s time and attention span. By prioritizing clarity and brevity, you ensure that your writing remains engaging and accessible to a wider audience.

Maintain Ownership

Integrating AI into your communication endeavors offers undeniable advantages, yet it also necessitates a sense of ownership and responsibility. Just as calculators streamline budgeting tasks, ChatGPT serves as a tool to expedite writing assignments while assisting with writer’s block, but it’s incumbent upon you to infuse it with your unique voice, experiences and expertise.

The narrative of my encounter with Dr. Weil on Cortes Island is sourced from my personal experience, an authenticity that AI cannot replicate. By drawing you into this story, I aimed to fulfill a promise: to provide practical solutions that empower you to enhance your writing with AI as your companion. It’s crucial to take ownership of your work. Your stories are what make your narrative unique and compelling. With AI by your side, you can expedite the process. So, dare to share it boldly—the world awaits your story. NIE
