CONNOils: Personal Attention for Everyone

In providing an array of integral components—spray-dried oil powders, extracts, even contract manufacturing— toward the building of safe, effective supplements, CONNOils’ has become a rising star in the natural products industry.

What sets the company apart is that in an industry becoming bigger and more complex by the minute, CONNOils prides itself on doing the “simple things” well.

“We’re a Midwestern company and we follow the principles of the region,” said company president Stacy Peterson, who founded CONNOils in June 2007 after stints managing the dietary supplement lines at Degussa and Cargill.“We’re straightforward and we keep our promises. If we say that we’ll call you back, it’s a done deal. Highquality products and highquality customer service can coexist. They aren’t mutually exclusive terms.”

To bridge that gap—and accomplish that corporate philosophy— Peterson keeps things lean and mean. She described the company as “having the larger company’s variety of services, with the small company’s attention to customers’ needs.” CONNOils offers very small minimum order quantities, a giant help for new supplement manufacturers.“There is a place in the industry for little companies with big ideas,” Peterson said. “We want to help these up-and-coming companies make an impact.” Clients deal with the same person—always.

“No one wants to talk to one person on Tuesday, another on Thursday, and then get the receptionist’s voicemail on Monday,” said Peterson. “That’s one of the benefits of our size: personal attention isn’t for certain clients; it’s for everyone.”

Firm handshakes and promptly returned phone calls are nice, but they don’t assist in the creation of first-rate natural products. Here’s a glimpse at what CONNOils can provide:

• Spray-dried oil powders: CONNOils’ specialty features the industry’s highest nutritional oil content in stabilized powder form. Company chemists monitor the production of the powders, which are produced in a cGMP-certified, state-of-the-art, spray-drying facility.

• Essential oils (e.g., borage, evening primrose oil, blackcurrant) and phytosterol concentrates: All are provided via CONNOils’ partnership with suppliers that must meet the company’s rigorous standards for quality.

• Custom formulations/private label manufacturing: Includes specialty supplements such as lecithin, phosphatidylserines and chia. Various delivery systems—including tablets, capsules and soft gels—are available.

These services do share some common ground, notably speedy delivery and competitive pricing. “Business savvy is a new Midwestern value,” Peterson quipped. An old one is transparency.“Don’t hesitate to ask us questions,” she added.“We have nothing to hide.” In addition to adhering to all Food and Drug Administration guidelines, customers can always see technical sheets and certificates of analysis.

Future plans at CONNOils include expanding its product line and spreading the word throughout the industry about the small company with the vast array of services. “We don’t want to get too far ahead,” Peterson concluded.“The goal remains the same no matter what our size is: What can we do for you today?”

Company Overview

Deerland Enzymes, Inc. is a leading custom manufacturer of dietary supplements. The enzyme specialty formulator and contract manufacturer services the nutritional industry domestically and globally through a spectrum of services to include product development, custom and proprietary formulation design and regulatory compliance.

Long-term veterans of the enzyme industry, Richard (Dick) DeSenna and Hilton Dawson—with nearly 75 years of experience between them—founded Deerland Enzymes in 1994. Over the years, Deerland has clearly demonstrated its commitment to enzymebased supplements and today is proud to be considered one of the leading GMP certified specialty formulators and contract manufacturers of enzymebased, multi-component blends. With a “Best in Class” technology organization working in Deerland’s new stateof- the-art lab, the company is poised to serve its customers from the initial stages of customized product conceptualization, through the design phase, final formulation phase and contract manufacturing services.

As the Deerland Enzymes’ tag “From concept to commercialization, we add value at every step™” would imply, the company makes significant investments in working with customers at the early concept phase of product development to ensure it has a thorough understanding of the benefits Deerland’s customers are focused on delivering to their consumers. From there, Deerland is able to customize a solution specific to a customer’s individual needs. To further support this approach, the Georgia-based company has introduced a no-cost service, YourBlend™, which is specifically designed to provide customers with a platform to customize their formulations to the specific performance benefits they are looking for in a dietary supplement.

In 2010, Deerland entered into a joint product development alliance with health care technology company Thione International, Inc.

From a quality perspective, Deerland boasts two separate quality functions to better serve the needs of its customers:

• Quality Control (QC), which is responsible for all lab-based functions: microbiological testing, assays, identify testing and all other facets of technical support, including R&D.

• Quality Assurance (QA), which is responsible for all process-based quality initiatives: GMP certification, batch records, document control and regulatory.

Deerland’s product line includes a broad spectrum of plant-, animal-, fungal- and bacterial- sourced enzymes, along with sourcing of complementary botanicals and probiotics, and it boasts more than 75 years of experience in the enzyme category. Ecuadorian Rainforest: Ingredient Supplier From South America and Beyond

Company Description

In 1997, Ecuadorian Rainforest LLC (ER) opened its doors as a supplier of all natural fruit, herb, marine, spice and vegetable ingredients from South America and beyond. Today, ER remains as one of the industry’s most reliable suppliers of all natural ingredients.

With more than 10 years of experience working with a variety of natural ingredients, ER can bring a natural product idea to life.

Executive Bios

Marlene Hurtado-Siegel, founder and president, was raised in Ecuador, South America, in a community where using nature’s pharmacopeia of herbs to cure illness was common practice, and where fruits and vegetables were the naturally occurring sustainers of life and health.Compelled by the intimate relationship that her community had fostered with the fertile rainforests of Ecuador, Hurtado-Siegel became equally committed to discovering the life-sustaining virtues that lie in ecological systems around the world. The result of her research, both scholarly and experiential, was a vision to establish a virtual ecology of global proportions. This virtual ecosystem would serve as a repository of herbs, vegetables and spices, fruits and marine products indigenous to regions in South America and throughout the world. Clients desiring natural alternatives to the nutritional impoverishments of an industrialized world would be able to acquire these items directly from a digital storehouse.Hurtado-Siegel breathed life into her vision in 1997; and, to honor the corner of the world that propelled her journey, she named the company Ecuadorian Rainforest.

Steve Siegel, vice president, has the ideal blend of rigorous academic and professional training, and personal investment in his company’s mission, making him an indispensable resource for ER’s thriving and expansion. Since its beginning, ER has benefited enormously from Siegel’s expertise in marketing and advertising. He prepared for his position through his successful completion of a BA in journalism and advertising at Northeastern University, and an MA in integrated marketing and communication at Emerson College. After completing his graduate studies, Siegel was appointed to a one-year post as a lecturer in business negotiations and meeting tactics at WSBNational Louis University in Poland.

Having inherited a belief in the transformative potential of natural healing and food alternatives (from mother, Marlene Hurtado-Siegel), and equipped with the intellectual resources to attend to the needs of an emerging business, Siegel continues to be the driving force in ER’s evolution.

Quality Assurance

Meeting state and federal food and drug regulations illustrates that a company is committed to passing a periodic review to ensure that its business continues to operate. However, when a company creates its own standards and enforces them on a weekly basis, that company is apparently committed to the clients themselves and to the quality of what people put into their bodies. ER exemplifies the latter scenario. Take note of some of the ways that it defines and enforces rigorous standards of quality for its products:

• The institution of an internal quality control program to ensure that products are free of toxins and undesired by-products.

• Alliances with science laboratories to enforce rigorous testing procedures.

• Weekly testing for microbial pathogens and heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury).

• Microbiological testing (total plate count, yeast and mold, coliforms, e. coli and salmonella).

• Random testing of materials moisture content.

• HPTLC (high-performance thin layer chromatography) testing for initial approval and supply of materials.

• HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) testing for powder extracts.

• Prevention of all sub-potent and contaminated materials from entering the products.

• Regular testing for proper identification and chemical efficacy.

NEC: Most Current Technology, Comprehensive Product Development Packages

Company Mission “To bring digestive and therapeutic enzymes to the world.”

Company Description

Since 1932, National Enzyme Company (NEC) has been the leader in nutritional enzyme technology. From research and development to marketing support, NEC provides manufacturers and distributors worldwide with comprehensive enzyme based dietary supplement services, while adhering to strict NSF and TGA certified GMPs. NEC’s primary focus is in product formulation and development—creating strong, marketable products that affect the nutritional industry in a positive and progressive manner. NEC’s corporate vision and mission is to establish supplemental enzymes as essential for a healthy life.

Company History

“Enzymes are substances that make life possible, the key to unlocking good health and vitality. Without enzymes, our bodies would not be able to harvest the nutrients from the foods we eat. They are the manual workers that build the body from proteins, carbohydrates and fats,” said Edward Howell, MD, NEC founder.

Howell’s interest in enzymes and human nutrition began in the 1920s at the Lindlahr Sanitarium in Chicago. He theorized that if he could replace the enzymes lost in the cooking or processing of food, he could enhance nutrient assimilation and in turn, promote general good health. Howell learned that an enzyme-based product was needed to replace the food digestive enzymes lost in the cooking process.

Howell established a private practice for the treatment of advanced illnesses utilizing nutrition and physical therapy.

Through extensive clinical and laboratory research, he developed a way to cultivate and extract certain plant enzymes. He then added the enzymebased supplements he created to the diets of his patients. These supplements had the unique ability to provide activity during all phases of the digestive process. Other physicians saw the improved health in his patients and as a result, in 1932, Howell created the National Enzyme Company to produce a general digestive enzyme-based formula, Genuine N-Zime #1. NEC was incorporated in May of 1945 in the state of Illinois and was founded to meet the growing demands for his unique enzyme products.

In 1977, the current owner, Anthony Collier, began working for NEC as the office manager; in 1979 he purchased the company. Sales of Genuine N-Zime products that year were $78,000. After relocating to Forsyth, MO, NEC began experiencing growth in the private label sector. With the help of research and product development, marketing efforts, a technically trained sales staff and the ability to secure exclusive enzymes directly from the grower, NEC has strengthened its position as a manufacturer and marketer. As a result of the company’s focus on custom formulation, NEC has grown to become the leader in the enzyme supplement industry.

NEC is a world-class contract manufacturer of enzyme-based dietary supplements, using the most current technology in production to blend, encapsulate, label and bottle enzyme products. The company offers comprehensive product development packages. Each product created by the team of scientists is backed by technical data sheets, product rationales, certificates of analysis, full marketing support and more. These no-charge, value-added services are part of what help NEC stand apart from the competition.

Nutraceutix Makes Probiotics and Nutraceuticals Better

With an unmatched collection of specialized process and technology patents combined with more than 25 years of experience in the industry, Nutraceutix contract manufactures the industry’s finest probiotics in a variety of forms— from bulk powder, to capsules and advanced tablets in bulk or fully finished bottles. The same processes and technologies allow the company to formulate superior, controlled-release nutraceuticals that offer distinct advantages to brand, retailer and consumer.

PrimeBiotix® Bulk Probiotic Powders

Nutraceutix has grown natural probiotic strains for well over two decades. It controls the entire process, from growing the organisms through the production of the final delivery forms, ensuring organism purity and viability at every step.

All Nutraceutix strains are naturally occurring and selected as appropriate and effective for human use. They are not genetically modified and have a long history of use in dietary supplements and food applications where they are generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

The company’s expert team grows and processes more than two dozen different cultures. They begin with ATCC deposited and verified starter cultures. These cultures are grown in highly optimized media, carefully crafted after many years of research. After fermentation, the probiotics proceed through separation, purification and drying, using processes chosen to avoid stresses that can weaken the organisms. Finished bulk powder is stored frozen and always shipped coldpacked to further ensure viability and product quality for subsequent manufacturing or distribution.

Patented LiveBac Processing for Extended Shelf Life Tablets and Caplets

Many probiotics found on store shelves fail to meet label claim and many of those have no viability at all by the time they are consumed. Over a decade of extensive research, development and testing of probiotic delivery forms has led to a number of exclusive patented processes that allow Nutraceutix to craft products with outstanding shelf-life performance, even at room temperature.
Patented LiveBac® processing helps ensure that products can meet label claim at expiration dates— something that few, if any, other manufacturers can even hope to deliver.Independent third-party tests prove it.

Products manufactured using the LiveBac process give the brand, retailer and consumer the confidence that their probiotic products are the best they can be, even under difficult conditions.

Patented BIO-tract Probiotic Delivery System Delivers the Goods

It’s a fact. Unprotected, the vast majority of live probiotics entering the stomach won’t survive to reach optimal sites in the gastrointestinal tract. Powders, liquids, capsules, even cultured dairy products offer no real protection, losing most, if not all, of these sensitive organisms during passage through the stomach’s harsh environment. To overcome this obstacle, Nutraceutix has researched, developed and patented the BIO-tract® delivery technology that protects the majority of a supplement’s probiotics from gastric acid, while providing optimal release of live organisms throughout the digestive tract.

Designed to be easy to formulate, handle, package, store and consume, BIOtract eliminates the shortcomings of other probiotic delivery forms. All BIOtract probiotic products are also manufactured using LiveBac processing for extended shelf life, giving these products a combination of advantages that other probiotic products on store shelves simply can not match.

Delivering a precise amount of an active ingredient at a predictable rate is the ideal. To reach this ideal, Nutraceutix researchers developed the BIO-tract controlled-release technology for nutritional supplements.

Programmable by formulation, BIO-tract can release active ingredients over just a few hours to all day long. BIO-tract already enhances a wide variety of nutritional ingredients with a rapidly expanding list of novel formulations, ready for a brand to take full advantage of.

The BIO-tract delivery system provides a number of advantages:

• Accommodates a wide variety of active ingredients

• Simplifies and improves dose compliance

• Heightens active ingredient availability and potential efficacy

• Gives “commodity” products a new competitive edge

BIO-tract is effective for:

• Controlled, extended release

• Acid resistance (sensitive ingredient protection)

• Buffering (reduction of stomach upset)

Certified GMP Contract Manufacturing

All LiveBac and BIO-tract products are produced in the Nutraceutix NSF-certified GMP contract manufacturing facility, which has also received an “Excellent” rating by ASI Food Safety Consultants.

Pines: Bringing Nutritionally Dense Products to More People

When Pines International introduced wheatgrass to the natural food industry 35 years ago, the closest thing to a green food was sun-cured alfalfa, and it was more grey or brown than green. Within 20 years, “green foods” became a distinct segment of natural foods industry and other companies joined Pines with the message, “Eat More Green.” That message was further enhanced when the USDA said those who consume three or more servings of dark green vegetables per day have a much lower incidence of cancer and other disease.

Pines reintroduced the amazing flash dry process developed by Dr. George Kohler and a dedicated team of scientists, who used this gentle, low-temperature method to dry wheatgrass, other cereal grass and alfalfa. Those flash dried green foods were used in scores of medical studies that produced many of the well-known results associated with green super foods.

More recent analysis shows that flash-dried wheatgrass from Pines has more than twice the ORAC value per serving than servings of freeze-dried vegetables. Because Pines seeks to bring these nutritionally dense products to more people, it supplies certified organic cereal grass and alfalfa to other supplement manufacturers.

Although a few grey and brownish products are still sold by some companies, leading producers use Pines’ high quality cereal grass and alfalfa because of their vibrant dark green colors and their measurably high levels of vitamins, enzymes, phytonutrients and antioxidants.

Pines products and facilities are USDA Certified Organic by Quality Assurance International (QAI), Indiana Certified Organic (ICO) and the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA). The products and facilities are also Certified Kosher by the Orthodox Union.
