TriNutra was formed to serve unmet health needs with fast-acting, clinically backed and efficacious formulations. It has developed an innovative approach to product development, focusing on extensive clinical research to support the efficacy of an ingredient, synergistic relationships between ingredients for optimal efficacy, and proper therapeutic dosages. After multiple years of joint research and development work with Nigella sativa (black seed) oil, TriNutra released the first vertically integrated and standardized cold-pressed Nigella sativa oil, branded as ThymoQuin. ThymoQuin is the only premium, USP-compliant, low acid, black seed oil clinically shown to support healthy cortisol levels, immune health, heart health, gut microbiome and overall well-being.
Liki von Oppen-Bezalel is the CSO and business development director at TriNutra. She has a PhD in microbiology and biotechnology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. She completed her doctoral work at the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), a branch of the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). von Oppen-Bezalel has published a book chapter and numerous scientific articles on environmental biology and cosmetics sciences in distinguished international publications. She has written more than 50 scientific publications and has lectured at global cosmetics and nutraceuticals meetings and conferences. von Oppen-Bezalel holds multiple patent co-inventorships in active ingredients and continues to pioneer new supplement solutions to promote beauty-from-within, health and wellness with TriNutra.
NIE: What are ThymoQuin and B’utyQuin? What benefits do they offer?
von Oppen-Bezalel: ThymoQuin and B’utyQuin are our branded and thoroughly researched premium black seed (Nigella sativa) oil nutraceutical and cosmeceutical ingredients respectively. Nigella sativa oil has a long history of use in various traditional Eastern and ayurvedic medicine practices, serving as a therapeutic tool for numerous ailments for over 2,000 years, particularly in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Through the use of optimal growing conditions, selective breeding, and a proprietary cold-press extraction process, ThymoQuin and B’utyQuin maintain the full spectrum of black seed oil (BSO) while providing higher potency, purity and bioavailability compared to other BSOs available on the market.
ThymoQuin is globally patented and is currently the only BSO that meets USP monograph standards. It is backed by over 11 clinical studies demonstrating its ability to support healthy cortisol function, stress management, immune health, heart health, gut microbiome and overall well-being.
B’utyQuin is specifically designed for topical and cosmetic applications, showing significant potential in the hair, scalp and skin markets for both ingestible and topical use. This oil is effective in balancing the microbiome (both skin and gut), supporting mitochondrial functions, enhancing ATP production (energy), and reducing inflammation and stress (oxidative and mental). B’utyQuin helps with skin appearance and improves barrier function, which aids in moisture retention, providing hydration, luminosity, firmness and elasticity. Additionally, it has been shown to alleviate itchy and scaly skin and scalp conditions, as well as significantly reduce hair loss, enhance hair health and density.
It is worth mentioning a third branded ingredient we have, based on our BSO technology, named ThymoQuin-OCare, that has proven benefits for oral care and oral health.
NIE: TriNutra introduced ThymoQuin black seed oil in powder format at SupplySide Global. How will the new delivery method be useful?
von Oppen-Bezalel: This new powder format of ThymoQuin offers additional versatility for use in functional food bars, tablets, hardshell capsules and more. Previously, applications of black seed oil powder faced challenges with stability and potency. However, this new product is the first black seed oil powder that maintains the integrity, stability and potency that customers expect from ThymoQuin. This powder application has been years in the making, and we are thrilled to launch and expand our reach into additional product categories.
NIE: Please explain TriNutra’s growing and extraction process.
von Oppen-Bezalel: TriNutra has developed a Nigella sativa breeding program to yield high-concentration thymoquinone, non-GMO (genetically modified organism) varieties that thrive in the local climate, yielding two to three times the thymoquinone content of other varieties. Other oils are extracted using selective extraction by Super Critical CO2 or solvents to try to maintain a higher thymoquinone content; however, these processes remove a large part of the oil composition, causing the oil to lose its full spectrum and significantly increase the free fatty acid (FFA) content and risk of rancidity. FFA forms in BSO because of oxidation during extraction and processing, and too-high FFA levels can deplete the thymoquinone efficacy, increase pro-inflammatory risk, and rancidity. By using fresh seeds and having complete control of the initial planting to the extraction and storage, TriNutra maintains ThymoQuin’s & B’utyQuin’s thymoquinone content (3 percent), and it’s extremely low FFA content below 1.25 percent (other BSOs contain 6-20 percent), resulting in improved purity, potency and optimal benefit efficacy.
