[Extra! Extra!] MAHA’s Effect on the Weight Loss Market

by Lisa Schofield | May 1, 2025

In mid-November, 2024, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was chosen to lead the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. His approach to leading the department’s initiatives was swiftly labeled “MAHA,” for Make America Healthy Again.

Politics aside, this is a noble goal. And t here’s little doubt that his MAHA agenda will impact the natural weight loss segment of the dietary supplement industry.

“RFK Jr. is going to shake up the industry,” asserted Thom King, chief innovations officer, Oregon-based Icon Foods. “There are a lot of thought leaders saying obesity and the many health issues in the American public can be put directly on the shoulders of the food industry. When you go back 60 years, obesity was a rare thing. So what’s the common thread? That’s what RFK Jr. is asking.”

Shil Kothari, president, Gateway Health Alliances, Inc., California, observed that Kennedy is a strong advocate for nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes as critical components of addressing the nation’s health challenges. He is known to be strongly opposed to ultra-processed, high-calorie foods while being generally supportive of dietary supplements. “However, it remains to be seen how these positions will translate into policies that impact consumers and the natural products industry,” he said.

Andrea Zangara, head of scientific marketing and medical affairs, Euromed SA, Barcelona, Spain has a positive outlook, noting that Kennedy’s MAHA agenda emphasizes preventative health, focusing on whole foods and lifestyle-based interventions. “This could shift consumers toward functional foods and supplements for metabolic wellness, appetite control and muscle preservation. Natural solutions enhancing GLP-1 secretion and supporting fat loss align well with MAHA’s philosophy,” he described.

He added that for the supplement and functional beverage industry in general, MAHA presents an opportunity to lead the shift toward natural weight management. This more fertile field of opportunity will also cultivate the demand that scientifically supported supplements be more affordable, accessible and practical.

Leslie Lannabere, marketing manager health, NEXIRA, New Jersey, believes that the supplement and functional food/beverage industry plays a crucial role in supporting MAHA’s goals of encouraging consumers to be more mindful of their dietary choices and to manage their weight in a healthy manner.

Kennedy’s “admission of eating natural foods and taking supplements is thought-provoking and is initiating new conversations about health and weight management, said James Roza, CSO, Layn Natural Ingredients, California. “Supplement and natural food companies are already taking note of this and with FDA’s (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) ban on red dye No. 3 and California ban on dyes starting in 2028 this will filter into mainstream consumer goods,” he predicted.

The newly appointed FDA director Dr. Marty Makary will likely also have a positive effect especially in context of working with HHS. “RFK Jr’s MAHA agenda and the leadership of Dr. Marty Makary at the FDA suggest a shift towards empowering consumers and promoting proactive health management,” commented Mariana Ortega, science marketing manager, Suannutra, Spain. “Makary’s previous comments indicate an openness to regulatory reform that could provide consumers with greater access to safe, effective and innovative health products.

Sydney Staedt, marketing manager, Bioenergy Life Science, Minnesota, stated he that the MAHA agenda emphasizes holistic health and personal responsibility, “which could have a significant impact on how consumers approach weight management. If public health policies shift toward proactive wellness rather than reactive treatment, there could be even greater interest in natural, preventive strategies for maintaining a healthy weight.”
