Israel-based Gadot Biochemical Industries is one of the leading global manufacturers of citrate-based ingredients and fortifying minerals and phosphates for the food, beverage and nutraceutical industries. Gadot has more than 50 years of experience delivering high-bioavailable products including tailor-made solutions and soluble minerals.
Ohad Cohen, the company’s chief executive officer (CEO), comes from a diverse background of chemistry and business with more than 25 years of experience in the food and ingredients marketplace. Prior to Gadot, Cohen was the CEO and shareholder of Vitiva providing natural solutions for oxidation, sweeteners and botanical extracts that was later sold to Frutarom. His experience also includes general manager of the Food Protection division and vice president of sales and marketing at Frutarom and the phosphates and salts for industrial applications at Haifa Chemicals. Cohen holds a combined MSC degree in applied chemistry and business management from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In his spare time, Cohen is a triathlete and participates in various international competitions.
NIE: Gadot Biochemical recently launched Gado-Go Mg. What are the key benefits of this product and who is its target audience?
Cohen: Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control and blood pressure regulation. The idea behind Gad-go magnesium is to supply your daily intake of magnesium in an easy manner. It can be for post-sports activities, easy to take when traveling or just a convenient way to take magnesium with a nice taste to it, “like pop rocks.” We provide magnesium citrate for this product as it is believed to have the best bioavailability.
NIE: Late last year, the company launched a campaign to educate formulators about magnesium deficiency. What is the goal of the campaign?
Cohen: Gadot genuinely believes that magnesium is an essential mineral for all, especially today when processed foods are highly consumed and the use of chelate forming pesticides keep minerals bound in the soil they grow on. We think that magnesium can be implemented in various foods and beverages to help the population reduce unwelcome results of magnesium deficiency. We also want people to be aware that taking magnesium is not enough. It is also important that this mineral is actually absorbed in the body. That is why Gadot promotes only organic forms of magnesium and providing high bioavailable products.
NIE: In March, the company introduced Chewable Zinc Citrate. Has there been an increased interest in the product due to the COVID-19 pandemic?
Cohen: We have seen an increase in demand for zinc and magnesium products due to the current global health situation. Zinc is attributed to helping build a stronger immune system, and magnesium citrate is understood to help with relaxation.
NIE: What steps has Gadot Biochemical taken to ensure quality?
Cohen: Gadot has very stringent procedures in ensuring high-quality products and we do whatever it takes to keep quality as our top priority. Today’s competitive market, in almost every category of products and services, is characterized by accelerating changes, innovation and massive amounts of new information. When you are in the manufacturing business, you want to make sure that you produce a high level of quality in everything that you make. There are many ways to ensure the quality of products, which range from the physical composition components of the product to the actual product performance itself. Changing customer needs also fuels much of this rapid evolution in our marketplace. Significant customer behavior and market preference can happen almost overnight.
NIE: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Cohen: Gadot has a flourishing research and development unit, and consistently invests heavily in new technologies and equipment. In the near future, Gadot will be introducing several new organic minerals (such as gluconates) as well as fermentation-based products.
