Immune Health

[Extra! Extra!] Immunometabolism

by Mike Straus | September 1, 2026

Immune cells are some of the body’s most energy-hungry cells. When the immune system detects a virus, bacterium, or other threat, immune cells rapidly change the way they produce and use energy in order to mount an effective response.

The study of these metabolic processes is called immunometabolism. Researchers now recognize that immune function depends not only on vitamins and minerals, but also on the metabolic health of the immune cells themselves.

For product developers, immunometabolism offers a new framework for innovation. Instead of focusing solely on traditional immune-support ingredients, manufacturers are increasingly exploring formulations that support mitochondrial function, healthy inflammatory responses, gut microbiome health, cellular resilience and metabolic wellness.

For more information on immunometabolism, see this primer from the Journal of Innate Immunity.
