Not Immune to Evolution

The immune health ingredients market is diversifying thanks to emerging research into novel ingredients.

The immune health ingredients space is undergoing rapid evolution as new ingredients come to market. Immune health remains an important niche for the industry and for consumers, with Millennials in particular driving demand. Experts say this category has evolved from the reactive, illness-focused purchasing seen during the pandemic into a proactive, daily wellness-oriented space. Here are some of the major trends driving the immune health ingredients market in 2026.

Immune Health Gets Personal

The immune health ingredients market is becoming more personalized, said Marie Parks, an ingredient science specialist at Stratum Nutrition in Carthage, MO. Parks pointed to Mintel’s 2025 U.S. Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements Report as evidence that consumers are moving away from generic, one-size-fits-all products, instead prioritizing clear ingredient information, research-backed benefits, and solutions tailored to their individual needs.

“Reports by FMCG Gurus shows a similar shift from long-term or crisis-driven health goals toward immediate, everyday well-being,” Parks explained. “Two in five consumers globally say they take a proactive approach to health, including trying to prevent problems before symptoms occur, while 44 percent are interested in products customized to their individual needs.”

Parks said that consumers haven’t lost interest in immune health – rather, the immune health category is now competing with highly tangible priorities like energy, stress, sleep, digestion and mental performance.

Ståle Søfting, chief commercial officer for GC Rieber VivoMega in Norway, said that immune health continues to be one of the strongest categories in the dietary supplement market. That said, Søfting noted, consumer expectations have evolved. Rather than viewing immune support as a seasonal need, today’s consumers increasingly see it as part of a year-round wellness routine that includes nutrition, sleep, stress management and physical activity.

“There’s also a growing scientific recognition that a healthy immune response involves the body’s ability to appropriately regulate and resolve inflammation,” Søfting explained. “As a result, manufacturers are looking beyond traditional immune health ingredients and toward nutrients such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) omega-3s, which are being studied for their roles in supporting normal immune function and the body’s natural inflammatory response. For formulators, this reflects a broader shift toward science-backed ingredients that support overall wellness rather than addressing a single health need.”

Today’s consumers are also more discerning, said James Roza, chief scientific officer for Layn Natural Ingredients in Irvine, CA. Roza noted that consumers are now far more aware of the importance of maintaining a resilient immune system. What began as a heightened interest in short-term immune support, he said, has evolved into a long-term commitment to proactive wellness and preventive health.

“Today’s consumers are looking beyond traditional vitamins and minerals in favor of natural, science-backed ingredients that offer clinically validated benefits, clean-label credentials and multifunctional support,” Roza said. “Rather than seeking products solely for cold and flu season, they increasingly view immune health as being interconnected with gut health, stress management, sleep quality, healthy aging and overall resilience. This shift presents significant opportunities for botanical ingredients that can deliver comprehensive wellness benefits while meeting growing expectations for efficacy, transparency and sustainability.”

Seniors, Influencers Prioritize Immunity

The immune health market is strongly buoyed by demand from seniors, who are more likely to consider healthy habits to boost immune resilience during the winter, said Annie Eng, chief executive officer of HP Ingredients in Bradenton, FL. Eng noted that there’s also a lot of excitement about immunity in the social media influencer community, with wellness influencers spotlighting the interconnectedness of immune health with gut health, stress management and metabolic function.

“The word of 2026 regarding immunity is ‘fibermaxxing,’” Eng said. “This is a popular viral movement where influencers and content creators track between 25 and 35 grams of fiber daily to nourish specific immune-supporting gut bacteria. They tend to spotlight biotics and fermented foods.”

Specialty Enzymes & Probiotics Director of Science Ankit Rathi in Chino, CA said that Millennials are also prioritizing immune health, largely due to their life stage. Many Millennial consumers have young children, and frequent childhood illnesses keep immunity top-of-mind year-round. Millennials, Rathi explained, are also the most likely generation to take action by purchasing products that support immune health.

Liki von Oppen-Bezalel, PhD, is the chief scientific officer for TriNutra in Harrison, NY. von Oppen-Bezalel said that immune health cuts across multiple demographics, including busy professionals, students and athletes. While these populations are all taking a more proactive approach to immunity, von Oppen-Bezalel said their motives differ:

“While a parent may be focused on reducing the impact of seasonal illnesses on the household, an athlete may be looking to support immune function during intense training, and an older adult may prioritize maintaining immune resilience as a part of healthy aging. Across all groups, there is a growing recognition that immune health is foundational to overall wellness and everyday quality of life.”

Consumers, she said, also better appreciate the influence of lifestyle factors, including stress, sleep and nutrition on immune health. As a result, many consumers are incorporating dietary supplements into their daily wellness routines rather than relying on seasonal products.

Immune Health Ingredients Get Smarter

Parks noted that one of the most important developments in the immune health market is the movement beyond traditional “vitamin C plus zinc” positioning. Instead, she said, brands and ingredient suppliers are trending toward microbiome-centered immune support. Because the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a major interface between the body and the external environment, prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics and synbiotics are all creating opportunities for immune health discussions.

“Bimuno is a patented galactooligosaccharides (GOS) prebiotic that selectively feeds beneficial bifidobacteria,” Parks explained. “It is supported by more than 110 publications, including more than 20 clinical trials across populations ranging from children to older adults. Research has demonstrated effects on the composition of the gut microbiota as well as immune-related outcomes and biomarkers. In addition to increasing bifidobacteria, Bimuno also increased short-chain fatty acids, which are known to have beneficial effects on gut, metabolic and immune health.”

One 24-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial on elite rugby players examined the effects of Bimuno on upper respiratory symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms and markers of immunity. This study had the players take 2.8 g per day of a galactooligosaccharide prebiotic, or a matching placebo, for 168 days. Participants completed daily and weekly questionnaires and self-reported their upper respiratory and GI symptoms. Blood and saliva samples were taken at 0, 84 and 168 days.

This study found that the group taking the prebiotic experienced a two-day reduction in upper respiratory symptom duration. GI symptom severity and incidence were also lower in the prebiotic group compared to the placebo group, while the prebiotic group exhibited 42 percent higher salivary immunoglobulin A secretion levels than the placebo group. The study authors concluded that this prebiotic intervention reduced the duration of upper respiratory symptoms and also reduced the incidence and severity of GI symptoms.1

Søfting, meanwhile, said that manufacturers are increasingly looking for clinical research that helps clarify how ingredients may support normal immune function. For omega-3s, interest continues to grow in understanding the roles of EPA and DHA in supporting normal immune function, healthy inflammatory responses, and the body’s natural inflammation-resolution pathways.

Roza explained that manufacturers and suppliers are increasingly seeking next-generation immune health ingredients that offer innovative mechanisms of action, robust scientific validation, and benefits that extend beyond immune support alone. Layn’s branded Galacan is an example of this evolution.

“Unlike traditional beta glucans derived from yeast or algae, Galacan is produced through bacterial fermentation and features a unique helical structure with a distinctive composition,” Roza said. “This unique architecture has been shown to communicate more effectively with immune cells, offering a differentiated approach to supporting immune function.”

Preclinical research has demonstrated Galacan’s immune-enhancing properties. One 2024 study found that Galacan aided immunoregulation in zebrafish.2 Galacan is currently being evaluated in a human clinical trial with results expected later in 2026.

Meanwhile, Rathi explained that Specialty Enzymes & Probiotics’ branded ProbioSEB CSC3 is supported by multiple gold-standard, randomized, placebo-controlled trials. One 2021 trial examined the effects of ProbioSEB CSC3 on post-COVID fatigue, both physical and mental, in 200 patients experiencing the post-COVID condition. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive either four 500 mg capsules of ImmunoSEB plus two 5 billion CFU capsules of ProbioSEB per day, or a matching placebo, for 14 days. Subjects were scored for physical and mental fatigue using the CFQ-11, an 11-item self-report instrument.

After 14 days, 91 percent of subjects in the experimental group saw a complete resolution of their fatigue, compared to only 15 percent of subjects in the placebo group. Of the 9 percent of subjects in the experimental group who were still fatigued after 14 days, over half had a lower fatigue score relative to baseline. The study authors concluded that 14-day supplementation of ImmunoSEB plus ProbioSEB CSC3 resolves post-COVID-19 fatigue.3

Eng said that more consumers are linking oxidative stress, chronic stress and inflammation to impaired or underperforming immune systems:

“Research that shows how natural ingredients can benefit immunity via reducing the downstream effects of oxidative stress and inflammation are of increasing interest to formulators and marketers. The gut-immune connection is also a powerful opportunity for product development, and research here will help guide more precise biotic-based supplements for overall resilience.”

One 2025 study published in NPJ Aging examined the effects of aging, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress on immunometabolism and cancer rates. This literature review found that reactive oxygen species, in small amounts, can help kill invading microbes and coordinate immune responses. In contrast, excessive oxidative stress can damage DNA and impair immune cells. The study also found that aging weakens immune metabolism, but nutrients can influence the immune pathways. Rather than acting as immune boosters, ingredients like amino acids, antioxidants, and nutrients that support mitochondrial function can help maintain the cellular processes that immune cells depend on.4

Opportunities for Formulators

Manufacturers have a new opportunity in the immune health space: To move beyond single-benefit immune products by formulating with ingredients that support multiple aspects of health, including stress resilience, gut health, sleep quality, metabolic health and healthy inflammatory responses, said von Oppen-Bezalel. This multifunctional approach enables brands to develop more comprehensive wellness solutions with fewer ingredients.

Parks, meanwhile, said that the first consideration formulators make should be about the intended consumer and use occasion. A product designed for year-round maintenance, she said, should be formulated and communicated differently than a seasonal product, a travel product, or a sports nutrition product.

“For daily immune resilience, manufactures can position microbiome support as part of an everyday wellness routine rather than an emergency response,” Parks explained. “Formats such as a once-daily powder, stick pack, gummy or functional beverage can make consistent use easier. Because prebiotics do not require the same viability controls as live probiotics, they may also offer advantages in processing, storage and formulation.”

Søfting added that ingredient quality is equally important. Factors such as concentration, oxidative stability, purity and sensory profile all contribute to product performance, shelf life and the overall consumer experience.

“Immune health is built on a strong nutritional foundation, and no single ingredient should be viewed as a standalone solution. Instead, manufacturers have an opportunity to develop comprehensive, science-backed formulations that support overall wellness,” said Søfting. “For omega-3s, the focus should remain on delivering meaningful levels of EPA and DHA through high-quality ingredients supported by robust scientific research.”

Immune Health Ingredients Will Get Smarter

Rathi said that the future of immune health will be defined less by new claims and more by stronger science, combination formulations and greater transparency, predicting that strategic ingredient pairings will outperform individual ingredients by targeting multiple biological pathways.

Meanwhile, von Oppen-Bezalel noted that as our understanding of immune health continues to evolve, ingredient potency and quality will become increasingly important. “Botanical ingredients should not be viewed as interchangeable simply because they come from the same plant. Composition, processing methods, standardization, clear mechanism of action, and clinically validated efficacy all influence consistency and performance.”

The future of immune health, she continued, will become increasingly personalized. Advances in wearable technologies, biomarker monitoring and artificial intelligence are all creating new opportunities to better understand how nutrition, lifestyle and supplementation influence individual health outcomes.

“We also expect continued growth in multifunctional ingredients that address the interconnected nature of immune health, stress, sleep, metabolic health, healthy aging and the microbiome,” von Oppen-Bezalel said. “As research continues to evolve, manufacturers will increasingly prioritize standardized, clinically substantiated branded ingredients that can support multiple health platforms while meeting growing consumer expectations for efficacy, transparency and quality.”

The immune health ingredients space is rapidly evolving as consumer demand for daily functional products grows. These ingredients offer appeal beyond simple seasonal wellness, with consumers now seeking year-round solutions that can be paired with other ingredients to offer sleep, metabolic and stress benefits. As the immune health market grows, expect more opportunities for diversified ingredients with strong clinical backing. NIE
