NJ Labs provides expert analytical chemistry and microbiology testing for the generic pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, dietary supplement, cosmetic, food, dairy and cannabis/CBD industries. Founded in 1936, NJ Labs is an establishment registered and inspected by FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), as well as being an ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited contract laboratory testing in compliance with cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) standards. The team of scientists is continually developing and validating methods for raw materials and finished products testing. NJ Labs is at the unique intersection between servicing dietary supplements and pharmaceutical drugs, which allows them to offer their clients a wide range of comprehensive testing and services.

Sandra Lee is CEO of NJ Labs, a nationally recognized provider and advocate for quality in chemistry and microbiology testing that serves the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, dietary supplement, cosmetic and cannabis/CBD industries. As a scientist and one of the few female CEOs in the analytical testing industry, she has a passion for chemistry and how it influences multiple aspects of our daily lives. Prior to leading NJ Labs, she worked in many scientific roles at both Cardinal Health and Pfizer where she recognized the importance of uncompromising quality through chemistry, not only from the company’s perspective, but also from the consumer’s perspective of product safety and public health needs. At NJ Labs she leads the privately owned FDA and DEA inspected facility that has been a mainstay in the testing industry for 85 years with a certified full-service contract analytical testing laboratory that follows strict cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) regulations and holds ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation. To help clients remain innovative and competitive while still meeting rigorous compliance requirements, Lee continues to expand the expertise of NJ Labs while developing quality systems grounded in transparency, integrity and expertise. Lee is a graduate of the University of Michigan where she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.

NIE: In 2021, NJ Labs celebrated its 85th anniversary. What are some of the company’s achievements since its creation?

Lee: NJ Labs has come a long way since starting out by collecting milk and ice cream samples from all over NJ in the 1930s to test for E.coli and other microorganisms. Many companies struggled to survive and build a legacy as this industry and regulations have changed drastically in the last 85 years. NJ Labs has survived and succeeded to build a cohesive leadership team that embodies quality and developing work culture that can be practiced in union between all staff members. NJ Labs has moved from testing just dairy products to expanding to be applying cGMPs and USP (United States Pharmacopeia) testing to the supplement and pharmaceutical industries.

NIE: What testing services does NJ Labs offer?

Lee: We strive to make our clients’ lives easier by being a one stop shop as much as we can. Since we have both microbiology and chemistry laboratories in one location, we provide a comprehensive approach to analysis of dietary supplement and pharmaceutical ingredients and finished products based on USP methods to address all aspects of identity, purity, strength, composition and contamination. We capture most capabilities on our website; however, we highly encourage everyone to send us an email or give us a call if you don’t see what you are looking for.

NIE: The company recently added ISO 17025:2017 accreditation. Why was it important for NJ Labs to be able to offer ISO 17025?

Lee: We have an incredibly capable and dedicated staff who truly care about their work and take pride in being an important part of the health industry and this passion includes being responsive to our customers’ needs. We added ISO 17025 accreditation to our testing profile in response to testing requirements Amazon was placing on suppliers, as we believe that it was important for us to continue to participate and contribute to this industry. NJ Labs wants to be part of the push for greater visibility and quality within the industry and obtaining accreditations is one way to help drive change.

NIE: What are the objectives of NJ Labs’ Quality Assurance Program?

Lee: NJ Labs embodies quality as part of our work culture. It is the way of life for us and we have a focus that ensures consumer safety and protects our clients to the best of our ability. Our Quality Assurance Program is really a Quality Management System (QMS) where our objectives go beyond just the paperwork and assisting to bridge the gap between the law and people. QMS interprets the science and applies it to the real world products on the market. This requires integrity, transparency, utilizing appropriate methods and verifying those methods with the products.

NIE: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Lee: Quality should be practiced daily, not just during audits or proficiency tests. Good habits lead to good practices which encourage developing critical thinking skills. Laboratory work will always require critical thinking skills and continuous training and education. There is never an “end” to growth and quality.
